ORIGINS OF IKURA

“Ikura” is a Japanese word meaning the “roe of salmon,” characterized by large, plump, orange eggs.

While we usually think of Japanese cuisine as having a long and storied history, Ikura is rather new on the scene, originating in the latter half of the 20th century.

This is because salmon is not native to Japan and therefore must be imported from other corners of the world. Remember this when eating salmon at your favorite Japanese restaurant—it’s a recent addition to the culinary canon of Japan.

With regard to ikura specifically, the ingredient was welcomed with open arms by Japanese sushi chefs and other culinary creatives during the 1980s.

Nowadays, we don’t even think twice about eating ikura in the context of Japanese cuisine.

IKURA PRODUCTION
The process of ikura production starts with procuring the egg pouch inside the belly of the salmon, which requires a steady hand and delicate technique.

Eggs from the salmon are removed from the fish but appear as a single object that must be treated in a mild, warm saline solution before eggs are separated and rinsed.

This process takes time and is rather labor-intensive, with a slim margin for error. For this reason, it is a task reserved for the most highly trained chefs at a restaurant. It is difficult to scale in larger industrial settings.

This gives ikura more of an artisanal look and feel, in addition to its delicious flavors and textures.

Still, ikura is rather affordable compared to the higher-tier fish roe and caviar products on the market.

The price does depend on the type of salmon from which the roe is harvested, of course. Pink salmon ikura will be more affordable than the more elusive chum salmon ikura and luxurious coho and king salmon varieties.

With that said, it’s not uncommon to find 500g of quality ikura for under $100, giving you a lot of volume to work with at a reasonable price point.

After putting my gear away for the season, I recei

After putting my gear away for the season, I received a text from a friend about a little hole he found with chrome coho still stacked. I decided to bust my rods and waders out to give this season one last shot. Im so glad I did!

I showed up the run just after 10am to meet up with buddy and he already had 2 hatch cohos on hand and lost a couple. He started at 7am and told me the bite was ON. Needless to say a few casts in I hooked and lost a coho, followed by a few chum. This run was heavily stacked with fish, and to my surprise these fish were still in fair condition for being mid November.

I switched from chartreuse yarn to a single 12mm cherry red bead and began to work the seam of the run. On this specific cast I worked the float flawlessly balancing it between the calm and fast current, I knew a bite was imminent.. so I kept my thumb on the spool, eyes locked on the float.. the bobber stopped then sunk. Hook-Set, Fish On. I thought I had hooked yet another chum since this fish did not surface. It ran downstream, ripping the spool and burning my thumb. I caught up to it and locked in my baitcaster to allow the drag to free my spool-burned thumb. Fishing with 10lb leader I thought it was a goner untill it turned around and swam towards me, I chased the fish down reeling in as much line as I could while keeping the rod high to catch any slack. Finally the fish gave in after a couple more runs.. turned out it was a beautiful hatch coho, one of the largest I have ever encountered.

I thanked this beautiful buck for giving me such an amazing experience. What a way to end this salmon season. I ended up leaving with 2 fish, while my buddy left with his limit of 4. The bites began to taper off and we left around 3pm.

What a way to end this season, as this outing was my last session of 2023

Fishing with my brother today was more than just a day on the water. It was a lesson in patience, resilience, and the art of not giving up.

Life has a way of throwing us curveballs, and so does fishing. Sometimes, the fish just don't seem to bite, and it can be frustrating. But today, we were reminded of the invaluable lessons this sport teaches us.

We learned that patience is not just a virtue; it's a skill. We fished new waterways, methods, and techniques.. nothing was working but we kept tweaking the little things. Trying, failing, revising our offering, then trying again.

Failures are just part of the journey, and we should embrace them. We lost a few big fish, missed bites, broke off gear, but we never lost hope. Each setback was a chance to learn, adapt, and grow.

And finally, success!! And it tastes even sweeter when you've worked for it. Today, our persistence paid off, and we both landed beautiful springs when we almost gave up all hope.

Fishing is more than just a hobby; it's a great teacher of life's important lessons. So, here's to embracing the challenges, learning from failures, and celebrating our successes both on and off the river.

Chasing chrome is what we like to do!! The river changed drastically since last seasons blow out, so we had to navigate the new flows, searching for the right pieces of water. We managed to find a run in the lower river and put our beads to work. This is one of the first chromes I landed this season and she was a beauty!! This beautiful doe fell for a 12mm @bnrtackle bead while sitting in a tail out.

Interior lakes are on Fire. We spent 3 days at one of the lakes near Merrit. The first day was spent navigating and scoping this new lake for shoal likes and drop offs. The 2nd day was spent trying different flies and new techniques, we managed to anchor at a drop off and began casting green leach and vampire patterns into the depths on our sinking lines, the bites were non stop. The last day was spent trolling and I believe we unlocked the key to success. The action was non stop, between the 3 of us we hooked nearly 60 fish. We fished a type 4 and type 6 sink line on a slow troll right at the drop offs, you would never have guessed what the winning fly was.

We also got a visit from a baby painted turtle! He was so friendly that he didnt want to leave and kept swimming back towards us.
